SCOT F. THOMS

President

Has been in the green industry since 1983. Scot, destined for the green industry, started Top Quality Lawn Service with a partner at the age of sixteen to earn spending and college money. Top Quality serviced residential and commercial clients throughout Macomb and Wayne Counties. One of Scot’s clients in these years included the Grosse Pointe Yacht Club. In 1989, Scot decided to break off from his Top Quality partner and bring his brother, Steve Thoms, into a new business forming S & S Lawn Maintenance. The brothers worked hard satisfying landscape maintenance clientele in this new business. In 1991, the brothers decided to add landscape design and build to their company and changed the name to their company. Scot currently handles all of the landscape maintenance crews and a majority of the administrative tasks. He has also built and maintains great working relationships with property managers and other clients. Scot received as Associates degree in General Business from Macomb Community College in 1989.

 
       
 

STEVEN D. THOMS, CGIP, APLD, CLP

Vice President and Landscape Designer

Has been in the green industry since 1987. Steve received an Associates degree in Landscape Horticulture from Oakland Community College in 1997 and a Bachelors degree in Business Administration from Davenport University in 2002. Steve has hundreds of hours of postgraduate education including: the world renown Mike Lin Graphic Workshop, Dale Carnegie courses, and Michigan State’s landscape design short courses. Steve's certifications include: Michigan Green Industry Professional (MNLA), Certified Landscape Designer (APLD), Certified Landscape Professional (PLANET), and Certified Brick Paver Installer (ICPI). He has acquired state licensing in: pesticide application, real estate, and building. Steve is actively involved in the green industry serving as:

  • President and Founder of the Michigan Chapter of the Association of Professional Landscape Designers
  • Exam Judge for PLANET’s Certified Landscape Technician program test.
  • Former Secretary/Treasurer on the ICPI Great Lakes Chapter board.
  • A Judge for Michigan Green Industry Associations Environmental Improvement Awards program.
  • Member of the MSU-Ext “Lakescaping for Landscape Professionals” focus group.
  • Member of PLANET’s 2007 Detroit Town Hall Meeting
  • Member of the Smithsonian’s Cooper-Hewitt National Design Awards Nominating Committee
  • "Member of the Certified Green Industry Professional Committee" and co-author of the CGIP Design manual.

Steve is also co-owner of Thoms Farms, LLC. located in Port Hope, Michigan. Thoms Farms (started in 2002) is a shade and ornamental tree production nursery serving the needs of landscape contractors and wholesale nurseries throughout the Great Lakes Region.
